Am I too old to start... gymnastics as a male? (Read more for what I mean)?

-I've been wanting to learn to do back hand springs, flips, being more flexible, stuff of that nature. I'm not looking to go competitive, just some that I may enjoy and have fun staying in shape. I'm 18 years old. If I'm not too old, what exactly should I do to learn? Should I go somewhere for gymnastics?

When is the acceptable age for a child to learn to play the piano?

-My friend has a 3-year-old daughter. The daughter is interested in music. So I am wondering if my friend can start piano lessons for her daughter now or whether she needs to wait.I would appreciate it if you can answer me based on your personal experience.I never learned how and I feel it would have been a lot easier to start at a young age because you can learn ahead of time if it's what you really want to do. If the daughter wants to, that's great, it's great to have a passion at such a young age!
Singing along with Barney does not translate into "gifted pianist". Let the poor kid be a kid and enjoy life for a while.

How to become a talent agent?

-i want to be like an ari gold from entourage but i dont know what to major in, in college to become a talent agent and how to start off to become a talent agent. what are the steps?

Best kind of acoustic guitar to buy?

-i really want to buy an acoustic guitar. ive never played, i don't know how to. so what would be a good guitar for beginners? i want something that isn't toooo expensive, and something just to learn and get the hang of on. im probably gonna teach myself, i don't know yet. thanks!I was just like you a couple of weeks ago! I had always wanted to play guitar! I have now got my first guitar and am teaching myself at the moment... I may get lessons later on ... i don't know .. Anyway, many people laugh when I say this, but Ebay is a great place to look for guitars if you just want one to start of with! You can buy second hand or new and they are some really nice guitars! I got a second hand (a year old and in perfect condition - not a single scratch on it!!) 拢250 Aria guitar for 拢55 on Ebay. Also included in that price it came with a electric tuner, Teach yourself beginners book, a case and a spare set of strings. It really is a smashing guitar! I didn't want to pay above 拢100 as I was just starting out and wanted to make sure it was definitely right for me. I was really surprised at what I got for the money I spent!

People ALWAYS laugh when I say I got my guitar off Ebay but it is really the best place to go if you are looking for good quality cheap guitars to start off with. I absolutely loved the Taylor Guitars from the beginning but they are like 拢900 so I am going to stick with this one and save up for one in the meantime.

But trust me, you will be surprised what you find on ebay. Even if you just take a look, it'll be worth it.

How would I put a strap on my guitar?

-My acoustic has a nob thing at the bottom of the body but nowhere else. My brothers electric has another nob thing though. What could I do to put on a strap?theres different straps for electric and acoustic guitars.

go to a music shop and ask for an acoustic guitar strap. electric guitars have strap nobs. acoustic ones have a nob on the back but not the front. an acoustic strap has kind of like a string loop and it goes around the tuner nob.You have three choices. You can get a strip of leather or nylon lace and attach the strap to that and then wind it around the headstock under the strings. You can buy an inexpensive guitar strap button like this one:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessori鈥?/a>

...which does what the lace does but looks nicer.

Finally, you can take your guitar to a tech and get a new strap button installed on the treble side of the heel of the neck.
electric guitars will most alway have two strap buttons (the pegs you hook the strap too), some acoustics do as well but in your case. you must put one strap on the bottom button and if the other end of your strap isnt just a sring like material you can tie a shoelace or some string and connect it to the headstock of your acoustic
You have to have a strap with a little sting on the end. But I only have my electric strap and I just use like a 6 inch piece of shoelace or strong string and loop it through the strap hole. You have to tie it underneath the strings on the headstock right by the nut
One end goes on the nob at the bottom and the other end ties around the neck of your guitar. ; )

What Guitar Should I Get?

-I'm a beginner and I was just wondering when I get good enough to get an electric guitar what kind should I get. I don't want something over around $500. I do want something with quality though. If there aren't any like that it's fine. Just some recommendations of brands or models would be nice.

Thanks,

P.S. This wouldn't be my only guitar, just one that I could learn on.a nice fender would be good or something acoustic, if you are getting an acoustic, get an epiphone. A fender strat is perfect for beginners and you can ask someone at the guitar store what amp would be cheap and appropriatehttp://www.guitarcenter.com/Schecter-Gui鈥?/a>

Can I get A replacement for my lost Associated board Grade 8 Piano Certificate?

-I have lost My associated board piano Grade 8 Certificate can I get a copy?contact the place that distributed it to you and ask them.

In some states they will not issue copies.

Good Luck

Girls do you prefare guys that play electric or acustic guitar or maby some othe rinstrument ?

-It is about the persons personallity not what they enjoy to do. I hate girls that can't see through that. Both guitars and the drums really hot when a guys musically inclined :D
both kinda of gutiar are good (: but electric is my favorite because i listen to punk&screamo :)
Dude, the trick is to get them to like you on your own terms, otherwise they're just going to complain down the road! :)
Acoustic. Definitely.
Girls prefer guys who are confident in who they are and don't need an instrument to impress anyone.
Electro i love so much i could die by how turned on i get from listening to it

What are some guitar songs that i can play to seduct women?

How can I find an agent?

-I am, young, but I know I have potential to become something huge. I am a performer, actor, and great writer. I made fantastic grades in my band class, was many plays, got ones on my Solo and Ensemble Audition, and was first chair in my Jazz Band. I want to find somebody that will make me into a star. How do I find an agent?Do you have a private teacher? If not get one. If you do and think you need someone who can push you more, go find a more prominent teacher, i.e. someone who plays in your local symphony or teaches at your local college. If they're not able to push you enough, get a teacher from a major symphony or college. I'm sure there is still plenty for you to learn. Teachers can help you get better and share their contacts with you when they think you're ready.

I don't know that agents help with the training. I thought their job was to market a finished product. Not saying that finished product can't get better, but their focus would be the marketing.

Have you played in honors groups, like youth symphonies or regularly-meeting honors bands? How about performing on stage in community theatre or semi-pro theatre? Are you being providing music for public concerts at churches, city hall, and the like? If you're judging your ability only on what you see at school, expand your horizons. You may find that you can do a whole lot more, or you may find that your skills are being tested.

Continue to get out there and perform and spend a whole lot of time learning more. In the end, I hope you realize your dreams!Watch The Matrix. Agent smith is everywhere.

What does it mean to play guitar n stuff with feeling?

-what does it mean like internaly , stuff you just make up? i make stuff up sometimes so when i make stuff up im expressing my feelings...or something like that? or like playing threw a song just rocking out? im a decent noob player so yeah. It's so so sooo much easier too demonstrate what it means to "feel what you're playing" than it is to explain it.

Pretty much a lot of noobs play really rigidly. Choppy notes, obvious struggling. Feeling the song means you are just feeling the rhythm, and are more fluid and natural.

...like I said, easier to show than explain.

What instrument should i play?

-I have played piano for six years and i am starting to get bored of it. I want to start a new instrument and i have been researching but i just can't decide. I don't want any band instruments like saxaphone trumpet, clarinet or flute. Also i would like it to be somewhat portable. Basically not something like a piano. I might think about playing guitar, but does that take a long while to be good at? Does anybody have experience with guitar like instruments or unique instruments that were fun and sounded good? ThanksNo matter what instrument you select, it takes time to get Beyond the basics. Guitar is very popular and many find it easier to play.

Part of it depends on what you think is good.

Guitar does not require that you have a great ear to be pretty good. You need to be able to tune it, and then the notes are what ever you fret them to be.Ukulele - It's small, fun, you will learn it in days, and it will make you a better musician. It's a good lead-in to the guitar. The downside is it's a bit trendy and a bit nerdy at the same time.

Harmonica - Fits in your pocket. Easy to get pretty good at, hard to get great at. Completely different than a piano. The upside is if you do become great, people will hold you in high-regard.

Accordion - Much heavier than you'd think, and much more difficult to play. 50% exactly like a piano. If you become great, people will be sort-of impressed, but still not really like you.

I would suggest guitar when first reading your post otherwise you could try the ukelele or maybe start with something easier like... bass because there are less notes... Without the portable scale you could take up drums.. Either way I hope this helps :)
Bass Clarinet
I suggest a keytar or an accordion. If neither of those help you can just play guitar hero.
The world needs more good Mandolin players.

5)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtLwYzERKFQ&feature=relatedI think you are a good singer. Pretty, nice voice. You just need to improve the sound quality in the videos. Continue the good workyou have tons of potential! :)

Okay, so lots of good stuff going on here- you have great tone and have great pitch! You sound so lovely. You're voice would be perfect for that, poetry slam, play a peaceful song on guitar kind of gig.

Some stuff to work on-

- don't slide or do the "pop song whine" ( i guess i would call it that), try to really pinpoint your note and get there.

- this one takes time, but strengthening you're diaphragm and vocal chords will allow you to sing louder, be more expressive, and add vibrato which would all make your already pretty voice very BEAUTIFUL :)

are you seeing a voice teacher? if you are un-able to look up vocal warm ups on youtube and do them daily. Read a few books or talk to any vocalist friends!
Okay, I'll try to say this as lightly as I can. Your singing voice is...

...very, very good. Seriously, you have a great singing voice. The only negative feedback I can give to you is that you sound just a little bit "shouty" at some parts, but it's not that big of an issue and can probably be easily addressed. I hope you get very far in life with your great singing voice. Singing is definitely what you're meant to do. Good luck with everything!

EDIT: Like None of your business lol said, you should really get a better recording device. The one you have is, quite frankly, awful. It makes slightly louder parts sound messed up.
You aren't bad :3, but i'd recommend you get a better recording device, the one you have is all staticy! (:
Ehh.. Youre pretty good for the most part.. But you breathe too much and your pitches change a lot
you have an amazing voice. and your gorgeous(:
hhhhhh... yeah... the smiths would write a strongly worded letter to you

Who knows what this trick?

-Okay, There is a trick that I've always wanted to learn and I have no idea what it's called and if there is a video for it. It is that one trick with the handkerchiefs tied together that you take out of your pocket or sleeve and it just keeps coming out till you get to the end. and if it has to do with mouth in the video, that's alright too.YouTube "endless hankie trick" :)
Youtube 鈥?You know that site with videos and all. Yeah! It turns out that its quite popular and you happen to visit and use it quite often.

How many chords do I need to know approximately and memorize and play smoothly at 4 yrs of lessons?

-I'm wondering which chords I need to be able to play to play finger picking, travis picking,

What chords do you think I need to know after 4 years of private lessons?

thanksIf you've been getting lessons for 4 years and you're still memorizing chords, you're getting ripped off. You should have learned how chords are actually built years ago! It sounds to me like your teacher isn't doing his job (or he is deliberately not teaching you certain things so that he can keep getting paid).

It's the whole "teach a man to fish" thing. So here:

http://www.tinyurl.com/lucasmanchords1

http://www.tinyurl.com/lucasmanchords2

http://a.1asphost.com/LukeSniper/ccc.htm鈥?/a>

Learn real music. Learn how chords are built and figure them out on your own. Memorizing a bunch of chord diagrams is a total waste of time.

If you can't tell me WHY a chord is a G major or an E7, then your teacher has failed you. Watch my videos and you'll understand that sort of stuff.Well, of course the basic chords (e major, e minor, a major, etc...), but after four years I would say that you should be working on memorizing more advanced chords progressions. You might also be working on making up your own chords - picking notes that sound good together and playing them. Maybe even making up your own tabs too.
it gets to a point where u dont really "learn chords" anymore. chords names are given to them cuz of the notes of the scale used in them. for example, C major. well, a major chord uses the 1st, 3rd, and 5th degree of the scale. so the c major scale is CDEFGABC. we use CEG for the major chord. say its minor, to make it minor, u flat the 3rd, so CEbG. how bout a C7. well, thats a C major with a dominant 7th, so we start with CEG, add the 7th which is B, and since its a dominant 7th, you flat it. so CEGBb. also, youll begin seeing chords in music but not even thinking about the name, or bothering to remember them. so if you see the notes FAC#, thats an F major augmented, but wen ur playinf it, u probably wont care, u'll just remember what to play wen you need to play it. and eventually u'll be creating chords like diminished, 7, major 7, 6, augmented, add 9, #11, 13, flat 5, sus 2, sus 4 etc, etc. so even tho i cant play every chord off the top of my head, you could name a chord, no matter what it is, and i could figure out how to play it in a matter of moments. and with private lessons, it wont be long before you will be able to do that to.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a left handed beginner violin player playing on a normal violin?

-on a normal right hand violinAny disadvantages will be if you try to learn on a left handed violin. First of all, good lick trying to find a left handed violin. If you *did* manage to find one and find a teacher who didn't advise against it, you'd never play in an orchestra. Have you ever watched a string section in an orchestra? All the bows are going in unison...and in the same direction. Aesthetics aside, a left handed player would lock elbows or poke their stand partner's eye out.

Like most instruments, violin requires extremely good co-ordination in BOTH hands. Either way you learn, your weaker hand is going to need a lot of training. In one sense, a lefty has an advantage with fingering the strings. Look at it this way...if your chosen instrument was piano, it would never even occur to you to ask this question, right? Best of luck......
Just to chip in: I've only seen someone play a "left-handed"--i.e. reversed--violin in my 24 years of violin experience. It was because she had had polio as an infant and been slightly paralyzed on the left side; she could still move the bow with her left hand but not individual fingers. Aside from that case, I've never seen anyone put the violin on the opposite shoulder.
There are little if any disadvantages of being a left-handed violinist. As a beginner though, you might have to work on your bow hold so that it can be more comfortable for you and you can still get the right sound. I know plenty of left-handed violinist and they all play amazingly :)
My first teacher used to claim that musical instruments were all designed by lefties. The left hand in her opinion had the most work to do.

A disadvantage other than those mentioned. An instructor would have problems helping you since it would all be backwards to them.

Why do people major in music performance?

-I want to understand the reason why people would pursue this career or major even when there's little guarantee of success. Do people major in this field because it's the only subject they are good at? Most people's answer is that they are passionate about music and enjoy it a lot. They would rather "follow their heart" and enrich their life as a starving artist rather than money. Money doesn't necessarily fulfill one's meaning to life. As a prospective student looking into colleges, I'm overwhelmed as to what to choose. My parents would not support me if I chose a music major, but everyone else does including my brother, teachers, classmates, friends...etc. I have participated in many state honor bands and orchestras (I play flute by the way) and I've never been below assistant principal my whole life. Yet I am still doubtful. I am definitely willing to work hard and i'm extremely stubborn once I've set my mind to something. I just know that there will always be someone ever better and outstanding, but I haven't reached there. The first thing colleges will ask is why you want to be a music major. "For pure entertainment and enjoyment" is an answer that won't suffice to this question for colleges at least I don't think it will. Because it's such a difficult career, the only way to get a job is to apply to the top music schools. My private teacher believes I can get into any school I want to but the idea just seems to preposterous my mental wall turns it down immediately. I also enjoy learning about biology and applying to the college of arts and sciences isn't such a bad idea either. Can you give me some advice and list a few schools I can consider?Everyone will have their own reasons for wanting to pursue music. Many of my friends earned performance degrees because they wanted to spend 4 years immersed in music to nurture their talent. Others pursue it because they can't imagine pursuing anything else since music is their only interest. It's also the best place to network with other talented musicians who are like-minded.

Also, some universities offer concurrent degree programs where you can earn a Bachelor of Music, whilst at the same time earn a BS (or a BA) in a different field, like biology or english. It often takes 5 years, not easy, but I know people who have done this too, and they're all very studious. You could also major in something else you like, take music courses as your electives, and practice in your spare time.

Keep in mind that music performance is not a stable career (i.e. nursing), and many of my friends who went the music performance route have resorted to teaching private lessons AND working a day job like waitressing, that's not to say they aren't happy, but it's not an easy life. You have to decide for yourself what kind of lifestyle you want.To make a career out of playing the flute is very difficult. The Music Performance Degree is one of the best opportunities for achieving Professional status.

Most who go fo the Performance degree also take Music Education classes, with the idea of teaching..

Every state has Universities with great Fine Arts Departments.

Here in the Midwest you will find excellent programs at

Wichita State University

Kansas State

University of Kansas

University of Missouri at Kansas City

Missouri University

University of Missouri at St Louis.

Check with every school that you would consider. They all have contact information on their web sites.

Ask for entrance requirements.

Ask about classes and degrees offered.

Ask if auditions are required.

Ask about scholarships and their requirements.
People that are hopeful that they can make a career out of music will try to further their education in music. Where you are educated, and who you are taught by, will give you an edge on the other musicians pursuing a career in music. Some people will double major in music performance and something else because they want to pursue music, but are doubtful they will be able to support themselves with their music salary alone. Great flautists come a dime a dozen, so your education will be especially important. So many great flautist are rejected for jobs, when they could easily compete with the flautist that got the job. Education is key.

Laine theatre arts audition requirements?

-Hi, I know it's early but i'm 13 and i was wondering for laine theatre arts, (I know you have to do acting, singing and jazz/ modern solo) but do you have to do ballet as well in the audition?

What can I buy to protect my fingertips?(Acoustic guitar)?

-You don't need to purchase anything to protect your fingertips. The fingertips of your fretting hand may become sore if you haven't played a lot lately, but if you build them up gradually by playing for short amounts of time, and then increase the time played in small increments, you will develop callouses which will naturally protect your fingertips. This will enable you to play for long periods of time.

With the other hand, fingerpicking is easy on the fingertips - no protection needed. If you strum using a pick, that too is easy on the fingertips - again, no protection needed.

I realize that these things only address being protected from actually playing the guitar. In life, you want to take care to not injure your fingers, but what to buy for this, I don't know. A more specific question would be needed. You can put surgical spirit on them regularly which will harden the skin and stop them getting damaged.
Guitar picks.

Go to your local music store and I think even target may have them and buy a bag of them.
there are some pics that you attatch to you finger tips im not sure what there called or where you can get them but they work well

Tips on being a mime, don't judge!?

-SORRY THAT THIS IS LONG.... and yes i posted this twice

Okay, I'm wanting to mime @ old town or the mall just for my own entertainment, its one of my small goals in life, haha. I still am in acting classes/theater and I've been in them for awhile and I'm also in cheer, so I got the whole facial expression thing down but I just need more tips for pretending to hold stuff / "creating" invisible objects. I also need tips on mime make up! Would it be better for a mime to have red or black lipstick? I was thinking red because i don't want to get confused with some weird goth kid.

I hope I can convince some friends to do it with me, or at least dress up as mimes so we can have mime convention going on haha! so I'll need help on that too!!!!

I really like the headdress, the lace, the socks and the "makeup" (its animated so its kinda hard to relate to it, but i still like the style) in this outfit, but I don't want to be half naked: http://abstract.desktopnexus.com/wallpap鈥?/a>

I'm only in highschool,, so I'm not sure if my parents will let me... so ill need help on convincing them hahah! My parents are scared to let me be places alone because they're worried I'll be harassed by guys... but seriously whos going to want to rape a mime? lol

(NOTE: i wasn't invited to mime or anything though... will i get arrested if i just show up and start miming?)I don't know if you will get arrested, I thought the same thing while reading it. Go to the police station and ask the cheif if you can, and if he says yes then you can.

P.S. You posted this twice! :P

How to learn to play piano?

-I've been trying to teach myself how to play piano. I know the basic chords but it's kind of hard for me to try and play with both hands at one time. Is there a way that can help me get better with just playing piano in general. Maybe like an online tutor or tutorial videos. I don't wanna waste money on lessons i would rather just teach myself so is there anyway? It also has to be free cause I don't wanna spend any money.I know you said you don't want a teacher, but that's really the best, and in my humble opinion, the only way to TRULY learn how to play well. I'm not saying all self-taught pianists are bad players, but you will get so much more out of piano by having a teacher. If you get a good teacher and practice, I guarantee you will not "waste money" on this hobby, which can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

Note: I have some friends who tried to teach themselves the piano and the majority gave up due to frustration, which was mostly caused by lack of progress. One friend took my advice and began taking private lessons. Because she tried (and failed) to teach herself, she learned that she did quite a bit of damage to her technique...of course the damage took a while to reverse, which set her back even farther...anyhow, good luck to you.practice scales with both hands, you now hand exercising. Check out those tutorials on you tube. It's free :D

How much would a pawn shop would give?

-how much would a pawn shop give me for a epiphone les paul standard i mean i just want a cheap 200$ esp or cheap bc rich warlock guitar i want a heavy metal guitar, the epiphone les paul is a good guitar but i played through an esp ex-50 and i was blown away, now i want something similar.Any suggestions would be great.I don't mind if they give 100$ I mean the guitar is actually quite worn outPawn shop offers about 1/2 of what they expect to get when they sell it. The advantage is that they have a lot more customers to look at it, than you would.

I saw one for sale in a pawn shop for $150 and it was in better condition than what you describe, so I am guessing $50 and at most $75. There is one way to be sure. Take it in and ask what they will give. Be prepared to bargain.
If it is worn out don't expect much. When it comes right down to it the epiphone les pauls are not a Gibson Les paul. I sold my epiphone les paul custom to a pawn shop for $100.00 but it was in really good shape. He told me if it was a Gibson model we would be talking about $1000s.
It depends on the model. A pawn shop will always give you lousy money for an instrument.

But there's no reason a Les Paul shouldn't sound fine for any kind of rock or metal.

If it's worn out I'd be surprized if you got $100.

I own a new weimar flute. i want to sell it but how much is it worth?

-I dont have any time to practice it because i play the trumpet. This is Far East junk - there is NO SUCH BRAND as Weimar. These are made by the ton in cheap factories, and they slap ANY name you want on them. Whatever you paid it was too much. Even almost new, I doubt you can sell this flute ( betcha it is nickel. or maybe silver-plated?) for more than $50-75.

Want REAL brands? Look at www.fluteworld.com. You will not find WEIMAR there - or at ANY good flute dealer - only from shady places on the Internet - and that include Amazon!
I never even heard of this brand until just now. I don't imagine that it's worth much, but you can sell it on ebay for whatever you can get.
you had better search online

I'm 13 and i know i want to be in musical theatre? tips on how to improve memory/singing/dance/acting?

-i know the songs

wicked: popular, for good, as long as your mine, defying gravity

cats: memory

annie: tomorrow, maybe, hard knock life

etc...

and that's because my family love singing and i go to acting and singing classes and thats all i want to do for business any tips on how to improve my acting/ danicng/ singing and also memory skills? thank you xxIf you are taking lessons now and you're not happy with what you're receiving, you may want to look somewhere else. Never be the person that holds back.I am like just like you i know all those songs, my family is really musical and i am in love with singing acting and dancing. What i do is watch a certain movie over and over and i end up pretty much memorizing it then when the movie is on i act it out pretty much and say the lines. I find that saying lines over and over doesn't help me memorize it its better to act it out. I hope this helps

How to jam with a group?

-I'm a bassist & have made the mistake of basically ''bedroom practicing'' the past two years apart from lessons. Naturally I'd be expected to be able to hold my weight in a jam session after 2 years playing bass but because i've never tried jamming, i've very little clue on how to do it.Just get together and practice music or create new music.

In the middle of May, I purchased a Buffet R13 Bb from Lisa's clarinet Shop?

-Until i discovered that my low "e" and "f" plays ridiculously flat (like over 20 cent) even when low "g" and higher play really sharp, i started to be concerned. i really want the e and f to play more sharper. how much would tuning cost?

Going to Warped Tour 2011, any tips!?

-I dont think I know any of the bands playing but I still want to go. It will be a 2hr trip there and I am going with my friend and our moms. Ive never been to a concert.(: How much money would I need to bring?I went this year and water was $4 dollars a bottle and pizza was the same per slice. I would take small snacks and water with you. Make sure you arrive early. Eat Breakfast! I didn't and felt sick while inside a crowd until after I ate. If you want to buy shirts, they are usually $15-20. There are lots of genres so listen to many things. You can also drop your moms off at the reverse daycare. Also 30h!3 and The Ready Set ( they sing "Love Like Woe") will be there and you've probably have heard of them. Have a good time!! I would bring sunscreen and sunglasses(I lost mine during the first show though.) And If the band starts talking about a Wall of Death and the area where you are clears, stay away.! lol. Have Tons of Fun!!
My standard concert-packing list:

Comfortable shoes. VERY comfortable shoes.

A frozen water bottle to keep in the car for after the show.

Tylenol, just in case.

Earplugs, unless you want to go deaf someday from going to too many concerts.

Enough money to buy a t-shirt. Probably $30, just in case.

Have fun!

What is the value of a boosey hawkes flute?

-Boosey & Hawkes - London

Series 2 - 20

I played it over 20yrs ago in school.

IS IT TOO LATE TO BECOME A PRO MUSICIAN?? THIS IS URGENT!!!?

-So i'm a seventeen yr old started learning the flute few yrs ago, just recently i sat for the grade 3 flute music exam, i think i did well. i've always liked music, especially the flute. but my flute tutor said that it's a bit late for a seventeenager to become a succesfull and professional musician. the point is that i luv3 the flute, and want to study music in the states, where i assume a lot of ppl r gonna be much better than me? I want to be famous and really good at music. i wanna go big or else i'll just go home... please, wise ppl out there, help me by telling me.You're 17. At your age, people who are going to become professional flautists are playing at a much higher grade and preparing their auditions for music schools. Most of them probably played their Grade 3 exams many years ago.

Flute players are a dime a dozen here. You would have to stand out among all those who passed your level long ago just to get into a music school. Then, since there are way more students graduating with degrees in music than there are jobs opening, you'd have to be near the top of the heap that got into music school if you wanted to get a job.

Loving the flute is not nearly enough for a career in music. You need talent, ability and experience far beyond what you seem to have right now. There will be young teens here who know nothing about what the music world is like who will tell you to "follow your dream," but I'm here to inject a dose of realism.well . . it's great if you love something that much, and one would hate to dispell your eagerness . . however . . if your teacher is telling you this . . perhaps it is because at your age . . you may need to have progressed much further by now . .

I don't know . . I'm just suggesting though
it depends on where you live where you study flute and who you study with. there are some great programs in america and some great programs other places. if your heart is where it is then your heart is where you should follow...

if you created a band or joined a band maybe you could make a new hip band with a flutist in it. are you called flutist?
You wont be famous and yes it is too late unless you are a prodigee which it sounds as though you are not. Classical instruments only have "real sucess" in renouned orchestras and with Juliard there are enough brilliant musicians to go around.
its probably to late for you to go to school for it and become a pro NOW. but, you can always go back to school wen ur ready, get another degree, and then become pro.

This is a band question-?

-i'm moving to a new house in october but i will be going to eghs in august. i'm in band and i'll be a freshman and going to band camp. i'll learn the music and field show and everything. but i would have to leave to shs in october. so really what i'm asking is if you transfer to another school when you're in band will you be able to join band again? ....I read the question several times and am still not sure what you are asking or wanting.

Contact the band director at the schools involved and ask them.

How much does a good quality drum set cost?

-I'm starting up a band, and my drummer needs a drumset, I was just wondering where we can go to get a drum set. Does guitar center have good drum sets? Would you recommend an electronic drum set? I just want a basic drum set as well. And we'll probably add on to it later. Please if you can, answer all these questions! Oh and if you can tell me, what do you think the total cost would be for just a good quality basic drum set? Thank you! All answers appreciated! Most music stores sell drum sets, and a lot of guitar centers will, too. It's hard to give you a price range because it varies so much. Give the store a call to be sure of the price. You can also check online dealers for prices.

Here are some drum sets that are good, basic sets:

路 Mapex Meridian which offer two categories (1) Mapex Meridian Maple and (2) Mapex Meridian Birch

路 Tama Silverstar

路 Gretsch Catalina Maple

路 PDP M5

路 Pearl Vision VBX

An electronic drum set won't produce the same quality of sound as a traditional acoustic drum set. Find more information regarding drum set reviews, buying options as well as prices from this site:

Need help with acoustic guitar?

-When i play chords the notes always have like a buzz sound at the end.my dad said it was because my nails werent cut but i cut them and still the same thing happens. What can i do to fix this? There are a few things to address: First, are you fretting the string in the proper place? Secondly, are you holding the string down far enough? Lastly, your action (the space between your strings and the fretboard) could be too low, resulting from a back bow in the neck, which may need to be adjusted.

Steps, songs, websites(free), and tips to get good at electric guitar?

-I'm not motivated enough mostly because I want to be good already ! I want to play as good as Avenged Sevenfold! But I totally suck ! Well not really I'm past beginner but not intermediate or maybe ? (x well I was wondering if you can give me good advice . Because this isn't working out. And NO I don't want a tutor because A that's lame and B I like to teach myself. I know the basic chords, the minor and some major scales and I can so far play 5 songs really good like Mario theme song malaguena and the others I forgot :P thanks for your responses (:

What should I do to get better at playing the guitar?

-I've been playing for about three and a half years. I took lessons for a short time when I first started but I mostly taught myself all of what I know. I play mainly acoustic type stuff but I'd like to get better at electric stuff too. I can play basic chords as well as barre chords well. I can do a little finger picking but thats about it. I just feel like I can't find anything so I can teach my self more.Find scales that your favorite artists use and practice those scales until your fingers are worked to the bone (not kidding) and then use those scales to create your own style and riffs. Also, learning to play songs that you like is a good way to practice because chances are that the riffs and licks in those songs are also used somewhere else too. Good luck! =]Practice makes perfect.

i think u should practice more or even get lessons

What do you think of my singing?

Should I play an acoustic first.?

-I REALLY wanna play guitar. Mainly for the great electric guitar rifts from bands like The Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Guns n Roses and lots more. The problem is I think I should practice on an acoustic first but I'm not going to be playing one when I get an electric. What do you guys think electric or acoustic firstYou can successfully learn on either acoustic or electric. There are a few good reasons why it might make more sense to start on acoustic, however. First of all, I guarantee you that no matter how much you're committed to electric guitar, you'll eventually want an acoustic. Maybe just to bang around on, take to the beach...anyplace there's no power. Most beginners start on an entry level guitar and then upgrade within a year or so. If you start on acoustic, you can upgrade to a decent electric when you're ready...and still have an acoustic. In the long run, it's actually the cheaper way to go since you won't need a practice amp. When you buy your first electric, you'll just get a real gig-worthy amp.

The other thing about learning on acoustic was already mentioned by Kab: it's pure guitar. There are no other distractions. You said you want to learn great guitar riffs...do you have the resolve to learn the basic boring stuff before you start using distortion and the whammy bar? It's a big temptation with an electric...but all that stuff (fun that it is) can hide bad technique and actually slow your learning process.

I wish you the best..whichever way you go.It's a good idea to learn basic chords before you start trying to jam some Hendrix. Whether this is on an electric or an acoustic is up to you.
No reason to start on acoustic, except that you are not fooling around with amplifiers or special effects, which can be a distraction when learning.

What is the deal with these Chinese Gibson guitar copies?

-Are they illegal to buy? Are they illegal to sell?Illegal to buy it? No, but they are definitely illegal to sell (and make for that matter). You've got people making something and marketing it as something else, how would that NOT be illegal?

I can't even imagine how many copyrights those people are infringing upon in terms of instrument design.Look everyone needs to make money so they create thing called nock offs that are cheeper cause not Everyon has the money to waste on pricy brand name guitar

Do you have to be in good shape before you go to band camp?

-I've got band camp in 2 days and I'm starting to get worried because I''m not exactly in the best shape, and I haven't stretched in months. Do you think I'll have a tough time at camp, or should i just focus on having fun and getting in shape there? The dude the answered before me clearly hasn't been in marching band.

Marching band is a physically demanding activity. No, it isn't a sport. But you work just as hard as you would playing a sport, especially if your band competes in your state competitions.

Marching band isn't just a bunch of geeks playing instruments and walking around...

2 days isn't enough time to get into shape. Which that's perfectly fine. If your band is anything like mine was, you will do conditioning during camp. Here's some things you could expect to do at band camp to help you get into shape:

-Running laps around the field for endurance to march

-Push ups for endurance to hold up your instrument

-Jumping jacks

-Crunches

-Stretches

Marching band is really physically demanding. It really is. Especially when your outside from 8am to 8pm, marching around in the hot sun. But it is also a really fun experience.

Please drink a lot of water. It will help you so much. And don't worry, the first few days you'll be really sore, but eventually your body will be used to marching.i agree the first guy that anwserd doesnt seem to know crap about marching band i say try stretching a little for the two days you have but dont make yourself sore because then band camp will be hel ya you will sure get a work out during your band camp are you in guard or are you in the band

if your in guard

then try to stretch in my school guard is usaly working outside or in the dance room while the band is practicing there music but when its time to learn set we are with marching band

if your in band

you mostly learn your sets and practice your music

in both you run and work out and sweat bullent and iyour anything like my marching band then the week of band camp is the hottest week in the entire summer no joke but to anwsetretch a little take a short run every day or the 2 days that you have and eat a little healthier than you do or normaly would because you need to have your body full of nutrients with all those sets that your going to learn dont forget to take sunscreeen lot and lots of water and if yours is an all day thing like mine which is 9 to 9 then take a healthy lunch and dinner because taking a lunch from home and making it healthy will help you survive band campp better than those who go eat a big mac from mcdonalds for lunch
i dont really see what your physical condition has to do with band camp.

are you sure it said "band camp" and not "boot camp"? the 2 are very different.

What's a good song to play on a guitar in an audition?

-I'm auditioning for our school band and I'm not sure what to play. I have 1 year of experience playing the guitar and I can do basic and power chords, plucking, and some easy guitar solo's. Can you recommend me some good and easy songs to play on the guitar in our audition? OH! If you can give me tips, I'll be happy to hear it.

Thank you!OK...to the guys that said Stairway and the Dragonfarce song...if you own a guitar, please chop it up into little pieces and throw it away. Thank you.

Now that I've got the rant out of the way, let's address your audition.

Every audition I've ever gone to (and that's probably been close to 100 by now), either the song(s) have been selected for me or I've been given a list of songs to pick from.

What kind of "school band" are you auditioning for? If it's a school sanctioned band that uses a guitar, chances are it's a 21 piece jazz band (also known as a stage band or lab band). You're not going to impress anyone by playing Louie Louie (or Stairway, etc). You going to need to go in with a jazz standard like "Autumn Leaves" or "Latin Lady".

Now, if it's a pep band for sporting events, it's probably going to be a little more current stuff. Keep in mind that I was playing in college in the late 70's/early 80's. At basketball games, we were playing Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Yes songs...that's what was hot on the radio back then.

Your best bet is to find out ahead of time what they're looking for as far as playing styles go, and then try to pick something to match up to that.

Whatever you pick, make sure you pick something you play well. You'll make a much better impression by playing a simple song well then attempting something difficult and coming up short.

Hopefully, your audition won't be like the last one I went too. They gave me a list of 7 songs to learn (with vocals). When I got there, the rest of the band was 45 minutes late, and didn't know half of what they asked me to learn. The wound up offering me the gig, but needless to say I didn't take it.

Good luck to you.

How much should i sell my epiphone les paul studio guitar for?

-How much should I sell my Epiphone Les Paul Studio Series guitar for?

It is in MINT condition, played rarely when it was played.

Comes with a hard case that has no damage to it also.

Thanks.subtract 25% plus an additional 10% for each year that you have had it.

It is good that you have the case, but prices are not usually effected by the case.

Minta condition means you can not tell that it has ever been played. Your instrument is most likely in Excellent condition.

Do you think stand-up is dying?

-Famous comedians make only a small fraction of what singers/rappers/actors do, I feel like no one actually appreciates it anymore like I do.The need for such entertainment only appears to be less than in the past and it is a matter of economic for those who can't afford to patronize the clubs and show performances like they use to enjoy.

Tough times need the humor to get through them. And now is no exception as it was in the 'Great Depression'. Look back to that history and realize what a flood of talent in entertainment in all forms came out from that. The people needed such outlets, reasons to be entertained, in order to lessen the realities of the outside world and their individual struggles in their lives.

At 17, and holding onto that love to have an ability to make others laugh is a good thing. A nobel gift when you have the right stuff to see humor in anything and for all situations. Look at it as even therapy and something to bring a bit of comfort to those who are in need of just a good laugh to bring them out of their own levels of sameness, or negative attitudes.

That's real entertainment and would be a job well done on the mental scale. Never an easy task as you may have learned by now.

Don't worry about making it big but making it... GOOD.

If you don't deliver to those who expect some level of entertainment and the intelligence that you should express, then not only will you fail at your presentation, but not be fair to the talent that you claim to have.

You have to start at somewhere. Anywhere that you can get exposure and a reputation that will carry you further to your next level of performance. There is plenty of time, even now, but don't waste it worrying over an ultimate career goal.

Play to the present audience at hand, the school's activities when it comes to stage entertainment and programs. Go on to local colleges for performing arts, acting courses and communications in particular. Join a group, even now, to get some real on-hands experience in the meantime.

Above all, don't lose it. Your sense of humor. You have developed it more than many in life by now and it is a good element in your character to always be a part of you from now on. Even if it just to entertain your family or friends. Don't like that statement? Then there is more work ahead for you and you will have to weigh the hits with the bombs.

Keep writing for original material if you can, focus on delivery as well as hold-back and attitude. Take some lessons from the pros, attend performances where ever they are available and see how the others who have made the stage do it. Hopefully, you can even meet them and ask for advice and some serious (HA!) feedback.

It ain't easy being green, a newcomer that is. Just realize that there can be humor found in most anything, Especially, in being human.

Well, just look at us. (Phhhhitttz!!! Snort.) You can use that one if you like.I know what you mean. I don't think the industry is dying, but it seems like there used to be more prestige to it I guess. I think it may have something to do with all the great comedians we've lost in the past 10 years.
If stand-up id dying then we have a serious problem on our hands. Because most of that stuff is really funny. I don't think it's dying though because it was raging in the first place it was popular sure but not raging so we're still good. and I LOVE IT!!!

Which overdrive pedal is better?

-The Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer or the Boss Super Overdrive?i enjoy the boss more than the ibanez because it has more crunch and power to it. My opinion but they are both really good so it is up to you. If your guitar is ibanez, then you might wanna thing about getting that for design trait purposes

How do i fix a tight cork on my new clarinet?

-i got a new clarinet a little less than a month ago, and all the corks are pretty much fine except for the barrel/upper joint part. i can get it off by rocking it gently, but it takes a few minutes and i'd really like to be able to just twist it off.Try cork grease, and plenty of it. If that still does not work, take it back (I had to for mine, the barrel was far too small for the mouthpiece. I thought I was going to break it trying to get it off . Both pieces were still attatched when I took it back to the store). If they can't repair it or find another piece, as long as you have the receipt with you they have to give you a refund.

New clarinets can be tight at first though. It could just be tight because it's new. Over time it will loosen if this is the case.

Is my gym strict about uniforms?

-The boys at my gym are required to wear leotards just like the girls. They aren't allowed to wear anything over the leo either. Our gyms main colors are hot pink and green. Most of the girls like it because the guys have less of an ego. We can even see their boy bits through the skin tight leos.

Most of the guys act better too when wearing the pink leotards. Any thoughts?I would say yes and no.

Yes, because I never heard of having guys in loes for gym with the colors pink and green.

No, because if it makes them act better because their ego has lessed a bit, then why question about them wearing loes! Hahaha! ;D
This made me laugh....yeah your gym is strict

I'm a guitar beginner and I don't know the correct way to place my fingers on the fret board...?

-to get different tones and sounds?

Which KEY fingers do you need to please on the fret board and where?

I'm kinda confused, please help?

THANK YOU :)Just begin by learning how to form chords.

The G chord is fairly easy to learn for beginners.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcPhKVAsh鈥?/a>

Next you can learn how to form other chords such as C, D, or A minor.

Then... When your REALLY up for it... You could learn how to play an F chord. *WARNING* Learning an F chord is gonna take a lot of time and practice for beginners.

Once you learn enough chords you can search around youtube for some songs to learn how to play. The first song I learned was Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. Here's a youtube video for this guy that teaches guitar to beginners. His name is Erich Andreas and he calls himself YourGuitarSage. He's awesome!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBPWyIHPz鈥?/a>

Good Luck! Hope you enjoy playing guitar. I know I do.They are all *key* fingers; I'm not sure what you're asking. In any case, get lessons from a professional guitar teacher.

How to learn to play a bass for dummies?

-So I want to learn how to play a bass. I love the sound it portrays. It just gives me a ***** every time. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while now. I think I'd be good at it. I have long fingers, too. So maybe that helps. I need to want to learn how to read the tabs and stuff. All the numbers and stuff don't make sense. I want to change that before I buy one. Yes, I know I sound like I'm just wasting my time and money, but I honestly will put forth the effort. Any websites I can go to?

Warp Tour 2011 Please Help Me?

-Okay so my dad said I could go to Warp Tour 2011 in MN if I could come up with 100 reasons why I should be able to go, with no repeats. I've already come up with all the personal reasons and obvious ones. But i'm only at #66. I even named off the band that I like that are going to be there. I can't come up with any more so I need help. Name any reasons? Best answer is 10 points and will be like my best friend!! Please help!!67: its a once in a lifetime thing

68: its like 20 concerts in 1 so your actually saving money by going to warp tour

69: get a chance to make new friends

70: im only young once

72: by going to warp tour I'll be out off the house, giving you "you time"

73: If I don't go to this concert my whining and moodiness will ruin your day.

74: ( In case your dad says " Youve seen ___________ in concert before) I didnt get a picture last time

75: If i get autographs, theyll be worth a lot of money that i can use to buy myself things for yo and I to save YOU money

76: By the time all the bands will be in our area the tickets will be priced higher

77: By the time the bands will be back ill want that and more things and will cost you more money.

78: instead of wasting money on things I dont need for my birthday, this can count as my birthday present.

79:By waitign till "next time" to go to warp tour, ill most likley like music that youll hate, and is worse than the music i listen to now.

80: Music calms the soul ;)

81: instead of wastign time watching tv or somethign at home, im making a good use of my time.

82: (if this is your first concert) what better way to have a first concert experience than to go to 20 the same day?

83: ( if you have gone to a concert before) My first concert experience was a blow and this makes up for it.

84: (but if you had a good time at your first concert) I dont like that band anymore, and you didnt like them anyways

85: if I go to this concert i'll most likely be blown away by the best time ever, that i wont ask to go anywhere (besides like frends houses) for the rest of the summer.

86: by being at the concert and listening to my fav bands there, its a day free of my music at home for you.

87: My good example friends will be there!

What does it take become a concert pianist?

-I'm 17 years old and I'm self- taught pianist. I've been playing and learning for 6 years now. I can sight-read well but not absolutely perfect. I've taken a full year music theory class my junior year in high-school. My dream is to become a concert pianist, even to play for movie scoring industries. I know I have a long ways to go still. What does it take to become a perfect concert pianist? You are not even CLOSE to being a concert pianist.. nor would ANYONE who is SELF TAUGHT.. plus to be a concert pianist you should have been TAKING PIANO LESSONS since you were 6 or 7 years old. You can still make it in music playing the piano. but you will NEVER raise to the level of a concert pianist.

You DELUSIONAL people on here really irritate me. You think being SELF TAUGHT and NOT KNOWING THE BASICS can make you perform at the PEAK LEVEL of being a CONCERT PIANIST I started taking piano lessons when I was 6 years old and was playing PROFESSIONALLY by the time I was 12. I spent time with a concert pianist one summer and decided I wanted to do something else with my life than practicing 8 to 10 hours a day 7 days a week to be a concert pianist.. I was GOOD enough for it but the necessary dedication was not there so I went the commercial route and have never looked back

Lower your sights and get over your DELUSION.. and just get good enough to play with a group bbecausethat is about as good a someone with your limited background will ever get.
Now is the time as well, to start thinking about looking for groups and orchestral companies that support piano players in their membership. Attend not just performances given by these organizations but find out about their apprenticeship programs or student/guest and recital positions.

Most major city of every state usually has an orchestra which represents them and is part of the arts they represent to their communities. With today's economic and political struggles, there may be more few and far between due to such situations too.

Best to seek out then the colleges, universities and even community colleges who do have programs and student body that provide for those who are looking for opportunities as you are. There may be one in particular you may have in mind already to attend after you leave high school.
You need an inspirational quote, for starters. This one is my favorite --

"鈥淣obody succeeds beyond his or her wildest expectations unless he or she begins with some wild expectations.鈥?

(Ralph Charell)

So think of some truly wild expectations in your life -- not just in your music career, but where you want to live and so on. Composer John Williams must be one of the richest men in Hollywood, thanks to his work on films for George Lucas and Spielberg.

Should I play left-handed guitar?

-I'm left-handed, but I've been playing a right-handed guitar for years. I've never been very good at it. However, when I try to play with my left hand, my hand seems to play faster. So, I'm debating whether I should buy a left-handed guitar and see what happens or give up all together.

Any suggestions? You don't need to go as far as actually buying a left handed guitar as an experiment. In the short term, taking one of your guitars and stringing it upside down will suffice. Sure the knobs will be under your picking arm and upper fret access might be hampered etc, but it's only a short term solution.

Give it a try and see what you think, the worst that can happen is that you lose a month or so of practice time if you decide it isn't for you. But even then, the dexterity you will develop will still carry back over to playing right handed.

I'm an advocate of playing whichever way feels most comfortable to you, because you know what? It does make a difference, despite what some small minded players who have never had this dilemma seem to think. I see it all the time - people struggle to play right handed guitar for months (even years!) and once they switch to lefty they have a sudden epiphany and everything falls in to place. Bottom line, for some people it absolutely makes a difference. You'll find that most people who tell you otherwise have been playing for a LONG time and just can't shake off old-fashioned stereotypes.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.
Whenever I've taught left handed people, I encourage them to learn to play on right handed instruments. The reasoning is: 1. there are many more right handed guitars available and therefore a much bigger selection of instruments, 2. the left hand is doing most of the fingering work so a left handed person has this advantage on a right handed instrument, 3. all published fingering and chord charts are written for a right handed player and would be confusing to be interpreted backwards by a left handed player, 4. when learning something new, it doesn't really matter how you learn to do it. For example, if a left handed person wanted to play the piano, they wouldn't do so on a piano with all the keys arranged in the opposite order! My suggestion would be to keep working on the guitar the way you have started. Learning guitar is not easy for anyone and to blame your dominant left hand is probably just an excuse for not wanting to face the challenges.
If it feels more natural to play a left handed guitar then go for it. It makes it harder to learn piano (if you want to do that in the future) and left handed guitars are more expensive. There are also less models and styles of left handed guitars available. learning guitar is hard, whatever way around you learn it so I wouldn't expect to learn any quicker on a more-expensive left handed guitar. Go to you local guitar store and try one out.
bu a left-handed guitar, i'm right-handed (and used a right-handed guitar) but left hand was much easier for me

What college should I choose for my vocal studies? Mainly in Europe?

-I am a 28 year old singer and want a professional career in opera. I want to audition for schools this year to come, as I finish university next spring.

I have a good voice and technique, so I am not a beginner. However, some conservatoires are already closed for me because of my age, and I don't have the possibilities (time or money) to try ten different schools so I must choose a few that might give me a fair chance. For example, Royal College of Music in London has a one year Graduate Diploma, that will compensate for not having a music degree, which would make it possible for me to apply for a one year postgraduate program in opera after just one year, and earning it at age 31. As I have a dramatic voice, I don't think that is too bad.

The other thing I wonder is, should I apply as a sort of lyric dramatic mezzo or as a young dramatic soprano? If I want to study for just a couple of years I must at least sound like I know what I am. Today I sound slightly better in mezzo range, but my teachers are convinced that I am a soprano, but I don't sound great higher than A.

Thank you, I appreciate all answers.

Can I have a talent agent back home and get one somewhere else?

-So I have an agency that I'm signed with in Kansas City however I'm trying to get an agency in L.A. to sign me. My agency covers only states around KS. So I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I know some actors have a home agency and one in another place?!

-THRILLER definitely. Michael Jackson was the type of artist that made it hard for you to choose a favorite song. Love you, Michael, and always will! ;)Thriller would be one of them.

Can guitar players always use 2 finger powerchords?

-I've been playing guitar for over 2 years , and I always use 2 finger powerchords.

For example

----------------------------------------鈥?br>
----------------------------------------鈥?

----------------------------------------鈥?br>
----------------------------------------鈥?br>
-------------------5--------------------鈥?br>
-------------------3--------------------鈥? That is a 2 finger powerchord.

Most guitarists use 3 finger powerchords. I'm worried if im playing chords wrong. Is it ok for guitarists to use 2 finger powerchords all the time? You mean like this? 3 5 5 X X X?

Because you can play that with two or three fingers.

Let me ask you something: does it sound different? Yes, it does. So that means that you make the decision regarding how you want to play it based on the sound you're looking for.
i suppose it doesnt change the tonality. but u mite as well learn the 3 finger...its pretty easy

What thickness of guitar pick should I use for Reggae/Ska Guitar?

-I usually play metal like Yngwie Malmsteen, but I've been asked to play in a reggae band so I was wonder how thick of a pick I should use. I currently use 1.5mm thick picks.

Is 34 years old too late to cultivate musical talent?

-I've loved music since I was in preschool, it always soothed me. I have other interests though like science and literature, and spent my teenage years a nerd for science and literature, pretty much till my late twenties. I obtained 3 degrees by the age of 30 then I started to make a family. My daughter is 4 now, so I can relax a bit.

I've had piano and guitar classes in college, and dabbled in some voice lessons. I can play with both hands, but I cannot read musical notes. HOWEVER, I'm really good at improvising tunes on the piano out of thin air, or sometimes just humming novel tunes to myself, so I can basically "compose" something original, so to speak. I just never took this interest seriously enough, but I keep coming back to it. Music is like poetry to me. What should I do now? I can take piano/voice lessons at a nearby school, but should I do anything more? I began a list of my fav. singers/songs in order to study the styles I like. Right now, I'm a fan of Sting (all would envy) and Paul Simon (the sound of silence). Advise please, thanks. (I'm a university teacher of languages, and currently doing my MS in environmental science, that would be my 4th degree. No wonder I put music behind!)You are free, at any age, pursue your heart's desire! There are no limits!

Just think of Grandma Moses, who began to paint at seventy-six and became a famous artist. Not that you have to become famous, but anything is possible.
Honestly you are about 25 years behind the competition.

If you love music that much and want to make it even more fun, with a slight possibility of taking it farther than just the fun stage, then go for what you have time and money for.
Start by taking piano lessons and see where it leads you. Once you get into it you'll be able to figure out what you want to do with music or how you want it in your life.
no way, always remember that it is never to late to try something new.
You should go with it.
It's never too late to persue your dreams..whatever they may be!

Music for choreography exam?

-i am about to do my choreography exam in dance and my theme is clocks..any suggestions on good music i could use?

Weimar Flute's value?

-I WANT TO KNOW HOW MUCH IT IS WORTH.Not much. Weimar is an off-brand, so the quality would be questionable. Also, many repair places won't even work on the off-brands specifically for that reason--they don't want the liability of returning a repair that may not hold due to the poor manufacturing of the instrument. (personally seen it happen)

If you're selling: look online for used flutes with good brand names (yamaha, gemeindhart, jupiter) and set your price well below that, knowing that the person who buys it may be stuck with a lemon. In all honesty, you should share that info with any potential buyers as well.

If you're buying: find a different flute. Get a quality flute that will last. It's well worth the extra you will pay.
You asked this before - and I told you. This is a non-name flute - this *brand* does not even exist! - and these start falling apart the moment they leave the factory. I doubt you will ever get more than $25 for it.

YELLING is not going to raise the price.
This is a no- name brand. If it is brand new (like two months or less) MAYBE $25- 50. Sorry bud.

Is this a good guitar to play alternative music on?

-Like acoustic versions. I am a beginner with a strict budget of $100.

http://www.amazon.com/Jasmine-Takamine-S34C-Acoustic-Guitar/dp/B0002GXZK4/ref=dp_return_1?ie=UTF8&n=11091801&s=musical-instrumentsSad to say, at this price range, all guitars are essentially junk. A better quailty guitar will set you back at least $1000(and this won't be great quality).

But if that is your budget, go and play some of the guitars you can afford, decide which one has the best sound to YOUR ear, then buy it. If it turns out that you really love playing this instrument and you are willing to commit time and hard work to learning it, THEN go out and spend several thousand for a really good guitar(most of which are hand made by luthiers and not the likes of Martin/Gibson/etc).

I play a classical guitar (hand made) and love every minute of it. It is a serious hobby and not a vocation. I play for my own pleasure virtually every day - it is basically a solo instrument.

Good luck.

Which beginner guitar to buy? Yamaha or Washburn?

-I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I have thought about this for a very long time and I can't decide which guitar to buy. I'm looking into two entry level guitars. One is the Washburn WD10s and the other is a Yamaha FG700S. I had a bad experience with Epiphone and so I'm not too hot about their products. Now here's what I've thought about these two instruments. I'm reluctant to buy a Yamaha because they make everything from motorcycles to 4 dollar recorders that I've used in elementary school. However, I do realize that at this price range, almost any guitar is made in Asia in a very similar factory, so they might just be all the same thing with just a different label on the inside and a different paint job. However, All over the internet, I have found a ton of reviews about the Yamaha and everyone seems to love it. But I'm skeptical about them for the reason I've listed above.

Next the Washburn seems to be a good guitar as well, and specifications-wise it's almost the same thing as the Yamaha. However, I can't find as many reviews about it online, but the few reviews I have read say that it's a great guitar as well. I have wanted to try out the Washburn, but can't find it in any stores in the area I live in and was wondering if anyone has played/ owned a Washburn guitar and what they think of it.

I heard that Washburn went through a rough patch a couple years ago where the quality of their instruments dropped drastically. Has this changed? Are they making quality instruments once again? Yamaha is fine, but I just don't feel comfortable buying an instrument made by them. They make great electric pianos and drums, but I don't know about their guitars. Anyway, my main purpose in posting here is to get an opinion from someone who has played both instruments and can fairly tell me which one is better. Obviously I will have to test out the individual instruments before I buy one, but in general, which guitar company is better? Washburn has been making guitars for just a little bit of a shorter time than Gibson and Martin, so they can't be too horrible, can they? Yamaha has only been around for about 40 years, so have they had the time to master this skill? Please let me know what your opinions are and which guitar you would recommend to a student or a friend.

Another thing I've heard is that guitars go bad after a while, so is this true for anything in this price range? Will I end up replacing it in a few years or will the instrument last me for a long time with proper care? This is going to be my first guitar, so please advise me towards an instrument that will last and will be a good friend to learn on. Also, please don't just say "Yamaha!!!!" or "Washburn!!!!" but rather, please tell me why you think this is the better instrument. So right now, I'm leaning towards the Washburn, but am willing to change my mind about it if convinced that Yamaha will be a better investment. Thanks for your help!

Here are the links to the two guitars:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/washburn-wd-10s-dreadnought-acoustic-guitar/430372000010000

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/yamaha-fg700s-folk-acoustic-guitarNormally I would take the time, but im tired lol, too much to read.

I don;t know much about yamaha guitars, but i've had a washburn electric and it had good quality and sounded really good.

And I do agree, Epiphone sucks.. I played some of their guitars a few years ago, and I can gladly tell you that I will never play one again :/

PRS Customs & SE Customs?

-I've been absolutely fixated on the Paul Reed Smith (PRS) site for a few months now, their guitars just look absolutely incredible. What's puzzled me though is that when I've searched for price tags on dealer websites for, say, a Custom 24, I've found prices around $1000 and others around $4000. I recently realised that the cheaper ones were "SE" Custom 24s and the more expensive were just regular Custom 24s.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the two models? They both look exactly the same, is there some difference when they're played?Don is partially right in the manufacture origin. (Didn't neg him out.)

But, PRS's are inherently way, over priced. I've played them and, eh, had to say so many others out on the market today do so well as the Paul's, but hundreds and even thousands less in asking price, even at retail.

You really have to set down and play the heck out of anything before passing judgment. The Paul's are stage worthy and have gotten a reputation through major players as promotional material to back up the attraction and sales of these guitars.; Not so much as the craftsmanship or cosmetics anymore.

You are right in starting to ask these kinds of questions. And discovering the tricks of the trade.

Go for something just as good in quality and performance, and at even well below these prices you have found. Try 'em all out.

And find that one that is your style and not some others' who believe that an expensive guitar with a high reputation will make them any better a player than a dozen other brands of which to choose from.

Its nice to have those extra bucks (you almost blew) to spend on other needed gear, or a nice weekend vacation with your significant other.

Never pay retail, and at the well established music stores will go along with you, when the dealing is done, and you had informed them of your knowledge of the market.

[p.s.: Sorry, maybe I should have said the 'Smiths' and not refer to the 'Pauls' to use an implication of the greater Gibson models. Totally different in nature these two.]se= Asian cheap copy

How do I get in concert choir when the teacher is a jerk?

-I tried out for my school's concert choir, but I didn't make it and all my friends and family are confused and pissed. Because he let some one that can't even sing and is totally tone deft in. My aunt thanks he's insane, my best friend thinks he's a creeper. But I really need help with my voice and he's not helping me... what should I do?As someone who taught choral music in NY for over 30 years - and judging by your posting here ONLY - never having heard you sing - I think that it is highly likely that the director chose someone who is dependable and a hard worker, and open to instruction - NOT someone who is clearly concerned with the entire world revolving around HER.

If you ADMIT that you need help with your voice, then contact the finest private voice teacher you can. Do you read music well? Can you sight-sing or sing with solfege? You you have any previous instrumental experience that would make you a stronger musician and singer? Or, when you do not get something you want, is it always *someone else's* fault??3 OPTIONS-

CONFRONT HIM!-

whether you do it alone or with a friend or family member, ask him why you didn't get in, how you CAN get in. etc

TALK TO SOMEONE IN HIGHER AUTHORITY-

talk to someone above him, like the principal. head of your schools music department etc, tell them you deserve to get in or at least want to know why you didn't etc

DONT LET IT GET TO YOU-

remember that everything happens for a reason, sometimes if you didn't get what you want its because something better will come along, i know its typical for people to say that but its sooo true, i had the same kind of situation happen to me.

I need advice from stand-up comedians?

-I'm 21 living in LA. I'm working towards a career writing for shows like Chelsea Lately, Conan, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, SNL etc etc. I'm majoring in English & plan to continue to get a Masters (since a lot of places require them to even become a page) but they also want people who have a background in stand-up. Open mics are traumatizing and the comedy community is predominately men. So if I went to an open mic and started doing a bit about how I hate blow jobs, it wouldn't go over well. Also, I have pretty awful stage fright. I've been in musicals, band, etc and I'm totally fine in a group setting, but whenever I'd get a solo, I'd start trembling, my face goes white(r), my heart pounds, and my hands get clammy.

Whenever I try to convince myself to go to an open mic, the same thing happens before I even leave but I also convince myself that my set isn't funny & all this awful stuff. I don't have any friends that are in comedy, so I don't have anyone I could work with to see from a comedian's stand point how to refine my set or to get advice on how to handle open mics. I desperately want to perform, but I'm too scared to even handle the drive to the club. I guess what I'm asking is that if there's any stand-up comedians reading this, I would really appreciate some (good) advice or support. If you're interested, please include your email address so we can talk. Thanks!I saw this while looking for guitar related questions...

I don't know anything about comedy, except what makes me laugh.

It sounds like you need help with performance anxiety as much as being a comedian, and that I have had in spades!

I am mindful of the time I started playing guitar trio (less people to pay...), I had pretty much the same idea about my music and my band, it is awful, I am awful, I am so exposed, there is no one here to make me sound better etc...

Two things to remember when you are preforming anything: no one knows what you are going to say (in my case it would be play) except for you, so take solace in the fact that you don't have to be perfect.

And second, everybody bombs and sucks once and while, especially at the beginning, if you do suck one night, don't think about it too much. Its about moving on from poor performances - learning what to do, or what not to do next time - then moving on. Over analyzing failure only going to make you more anxious next time.

So, the next time there is an open mic, just go for it, if you bomb, so what? Just do it. People, for the most part, pay attention to confident performers, if you believe you are funny, chances they will to. But like I said, I know just about next to nothing about comedy - just about preforming.

It takes a certain type of person to be comfortable in situations where you are the attention of a crowd, most people have to work on it, but it gets easier the more you do it.
