-I'm trying to write something up for my guitar teacher (he asked me to work out the first 2 bars of a song and put them onto a music tab on noteflight) and I need to know the key signature of the song, the capo has to be on the 7th fret for it to work properly though :(Placing a capo on the guitar doesn't automatically mean you're in any particular key. Like Adam said, that would mean that you could only play songs in E without the capo! It is easier to play in certain keys with the capo in certain spots though. For example, Bb is a weird key for the guitar, but if you stick a capo on the 3rd fret, you can use the open G C D Am and Em shapes.
With a capo on the 7th fret, the basic CAGED chord shapes will get you G E D B and A chords.
As others said, it depends on what chords you're playing. You can play the guitar in any key regardless of whether you have a capo or not. What the capo on the 7th fret does (besides make your guitar sound ridiculously like a ukulele) is to raise the pitch of each string by 7 half steps. So, if you were playing chords in the key of C without a capo, for example, and you then put the capo on the 7th fret and played those same chord shapes, you'd be playing in the key of G:
C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G (7 half steps up from C)
So take whatever key the song is currently in when played without the capo and go up 7 half steps and that will be what key the song would be in way up there if you used the same fingerings (don't forget there's only a 1/2 step between E & F and B & C).
That depends on what chord shapes you're using.
C, F and G chord shapes, played with the capo at the 7th fret, will give you the key of G.
A, D and E chord shapes, played with the capo at the 7th fret, will give you the key of E.
D, G and A chord shapes, played with the capo at the 7th fret, will give you the key of A.
F, Bb and C chord shapes, played with the capo at the 7th fret, will give you the key of C.
And so on...
In the key of b
